In order to take advantage of new email features and security updates, you must ensure that your email client is up to date. Most email client providers recommend running the latest version or the last two most recent versions of their email client.
On Wednesday, November 10, IMSS will be making changes (please see details below) to the Unix SMTP, smtp.caltech.edu or smtp-server.its.caltech.edu, servers that may potentially impact old email clients and applications. Please note that if your email client is connecting to Office 365, you will not be impacted by this change. In addition, impacted users/groups will receive an email from CaltechIMSS@caltech.edu.
IMSS UNIX SMTP TLS Ciphers Older Than 1.2 No Longer Supported After November 10
In order to ensure more secure connections to the IMSS Unix SMTP servers, on Wednesday, November 10, IMSS will be ending support for TLS Ciphers older than 1.2. After this date, email clients and applications (older than the two most recent versions) that do not support TLS 1.2 will no longer be able to send email via the Unix SMTP servers.
Am I impacted?
- This change impacts users connecting to the IMSS Unix SMTP, smtp.caltech.edu or smtp-server.its.caltech.edu, servers with old email clients or applications that do not support TLS 1.2.
- This change may impact older devices like printers and scanners that are used to send email. Please check with your vendor to determine if these devices are using TLS ciphers older than 1.2.
- This change may impact system generated emails from older applications that are using TLS ciphers older than 1.2.
- Most individual users will NOT be impacted by this change, as most individuals use Office 365 to send email.
Impacted groups will receive an email from CaltechIMSS@caltech.edu.
How can I prepare?
- Review the Email Configuration Guides to view recommended email clients and/or to verify your email configuration.
- For scanners and printers that send email via Unix SMTP, check with the vendor to make sure that these devices support TLS 1.2.
- If you use an account with Unix SMTP to send application notifications, please verify that the application supports TLS 1.2.
